Who is Satan?

The question is actually more interesting than the answer, which, strictly speaking, doesn’t exist.

Satan ... The answer depends on who you ask. If you ask a fundamentalist Christian, he will tell you that Satan is as real as God.

If you ask a liberal Christian, he will tell you that Satan – and his legion of demons – represents the evil forces in life.

If you ask a theologian, he will explain to you how Satan developed from an "evil spirit" in the mythologies and religious texts of early tribal religions, through the "challenger" of the Old Testament, and into the Prince of Evil in the New Testament. A devil who became increasingly evil and cruel up through Medieaval times, when priests and monks transformed him into the imaginary being he appears to us to be today.

To many believers, Satan and the demons are very concrete beings. Are Satan and Lucifer one and the same? Again the answer depends on who you ask, even if most people will say yes:

Satan has an army of demons in his service. What, then, is a demon? Again the answers depend on who you ask. Most people will agree that a demon is an evil spirit. Some consider the demons concrete supernatural beings – others believe they represent different aspects of Evil.
