About the Tower of Babel
Is the Tower of Babel a religious notion or a historical edifice?
The answer is probably: It is both.
There is reason to believe that the biblical notion of the Tower of Babel in part stems from a religious building, ziggurat, in Babylon. And then the authors of the Bible – in the name of Moses – have added colour to the story.

Babylon is the Greek name for Babilu – or Bāb-ilū in Akkadian. In Hebrew it’s written בבל, which in our letters reads babel. The word resembles the Hebrew word balbal, which means to confuse. This gave birth to the myth of God confusing humanity by giving them different languages.
